The event was organised jointly by the Internet Society and the local ISOC England chapter in which I am a leading team member. Web site on: http://www.isoc.org/isoc/conferences/inet/10/london.shtml ISOC presented four scenarios possible, 3 of them bad, and one of them good, for the possible future of the Internet: http://www.isoc.org/tools/blogs/scenarios/ I had the opportunity to briefly explain our project, so I put together a short presentation, which I enclose here as an attachment. A video of the presentation was made by Rex - and apologies for the sound, but you can see how well the presentation was received, judging from the applause. I have since received many enquiries for explanations about the project, and am pointing more and more people to the Web site. The Internet Society believes governments have key roles to play in raising awareness and encouraging the deployment of IPv6, and that government leadership can foster IPv6 deployment more generally. Speaking on a panel chaired by US CTO Aneesh Chopra during the workshop at which the announcement was made, the Internet Society's Chief Internet Technology Officer Leslie Daigle observed that IPv6 deployment is critical to the Internet's continued success as a global platform for unprecedented innovation and development, and to the future of organizations that use the Internet. Daigle said, "Just as any business that uses the Internet should have a strategy and a plan for deploying IPv6, the Internet Society believes that a clear plan for deploying IPv6 will help governments continue to provide effective Internet-based services for their citizens." The announced deployment timetable extends the U.S. Government's efforts in promoting IPv6, and adds to IPv6 deployment initiatives being undertaken by other governments, such as the European Commission, Japan and Australia. Details about the Internet Society's efforts to promote and support the deployment of IPv6 can be found at: http://InternetSociety.org/ipv6 Additional information about the U.S. National Telecommunications and Information Administration IPv6 workshop and the announcement is available at: http://www.ntia.doc.gov/press/2010/IPv6workshop_09282010.html ----------------------------------------------------------- Internet Society Urges Action to Safeguard Internet Future Global organisation calls on users to act to keep the Internet open and transparent at Internet futures event 29 September 2010, LONDON -- The Internet Society urged Internet users around the world to become active participants in the effort to guarantee that the Internet remains an open and transparent platform for communication and innovation. At its INET conference on the impact of the Internet revolution on business in London today, the Internet Society warned all users that they would ignore future Internet opportunities, threats and challenges at their peril. To illustrate the potential for a future Internet that is very different than the one we use today, Internet Society launched *four scenarios that highlight contrasting paths along which the Internet could develop based on economic, political and social forces emerging today. Of the four Internet scenarios, the Internet Society advocates The Common Pool, in which the Internet continues to be built on open technologies and processes, fostering permission-less innovation, economic growth, and social development. The conference heard EU Digital Agenda Commissioner Neelie Kroes endorse this approach with a resounding message that fast, cheap, open Internet access is crucial for all business and other users. "The Internet is increasingly a cornerstone for business and communication around the world today. We often regard it as a utility, but we would be foolhardy to take its unique and invaluable characteristics for granted," said Frederic Donck, director of the Internet Society's European Regional Bureau. The Internet Society said it is up to users to act now to ensure that the future development of the Internet takes a direction that is in the best interests of everyone. Referred to as the "Summer Davos", the meeting is the foremost global business gathering in Asia and was introduced in 2007. The annual meeting is held in close collaboration with the People's Republic of China and with the personal support of Premier Wen Jiabao. The meeting theme "Driving Growth through Sustainability" explored issues fundamental for global, national and business competitiveness, under four main pillars: + Improving Competitiveness through Science and Technology + Creating New Value from Business Models and for Future Markets + Facilitating Economic and Social Change + Designing Effective Global, Industry and Regional Solutions Singh was a panelist in a session titled "Maximising Cloud Computing" where he provided commentary on some current issues with cloud computing and suggested some approaches which could help build user confidence in the cloud. Singh was also part of a private session on ICT and Eco-sustainability. The Meeting brought together over 1,500 industry, government and thought leaders from around 90 countries and provided a good opportunity to profile the Internet Society and its works across a range of stakeholders. More information on the Meeting is available online at: http://www.weforum.org/en/events/AnnualMeetingoftheNewChampions2010/index.htm ----------------------------------------------------------- Community Grants Programme Project Showcase: IPv6 Crawler Contributed by: Olivier Crepin-Leblond ISOC England Chapter was awarded a Community Grants Programme award in November 2009, for the design and implementation of an "IPv6 crawler," a computer and its software that would crawl through the DNS at pre-set intervals in order to detect, for example, IPv6 DNS servers and IPv6 compliant Web servers, SMTP mailers, and NTP servers. The search for project partners led to a link-up with Nile University (Egypt) where professors and their research assistants got to grips with IPv6, and started the task of writing the software required in the project, as part of their experience. In the meantime, the London team of partners built and installed two computers and a router at Telehouse East, one of the UK's most connected facilities. One computer was set-up as a crawler, and one as a Web server and information storage, both connected to the Internet backbone via Dual Stack IPv4/IPv6. The list of domains tested consisted initially of the world's 1 million most popular Web sites, as referenced by alexa.com. After a cleaning up process, about 980 000 domains supported by nearly 5.6 million hosts were tested. The results showed how little dual stack IPv4/IPv6 was supported by major Web sites. Without content, it is no wonder that the current volume of IPv6 traffic on the Internet is so low! The results were saved in text files and SQL databases were created for easy interrogation. The Web site found on: http://www.ipv6matrix.org/ is an example of a front end which interrogates those databases, and displays results using the Google Charts APIs. Ultimately, we plan to document the SQL database structure, so as to allow for other projects to retrieve data directly from the databases. Currently, a full scan of all TLDs in the database takes just over a month, and results are stored for future analysis. It is hoped that a growth trend of IPv6 will be seen in a few months. In the long term, the data collected will enable researchers to find out exactly how major new technologies, such as the migration to IPv6, spread on the Internet, and will answer the questions relating to finding the early and late adopters of new technology. In the short term, the maps show a snapshot of real world IPv6 penetration data at a glance. At this early alpha (or beta) stage, we would look forward to any feedback regarding the data we collect, and for any bugs to be pointed out for the Team to resolve. On the question of accuracy of results, we have found that results are less accurate in TLD sample sizes under 900 domains. Larger TLD sample sizes increase accuracy. We therefore appeal to any Registry whose zone data sample size is less than 1000 domains to contact us, should they wish to provide a wider sample of input domains for the zone they are responsible for. ----------------------------------------------------------- Experiential Component added to Internet Society's Next Generation Leader Programme Two NGL alumni to attend OECD Technology Foresight Forum in Paris to discuss Smart ICTs and Green Growth The Internet Society is expanding its Next Generation Leaders (NGL) programme to include a pilot fellowship to the forthcoming Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Technology Foresight Forum. Two NGL alumni, Vinayak Hegde and Rafid Fatani, have been selected to participate. The Internet Society's Next Generation Leaders programme blends coursework, practical experience and mentorship to help prepare young professionals from around the world to become the next generation of Internet technology, policy, and business leaders. New components are added as opportunities present themselves not only to benefit the participating individuals but also to bring people with diverse backgrounds and perspectives to the discussions. The annual OECD event brings together policymakers from member and non-member governments, business, civil society, and the Internet technical community to discuss and identify the opportunities and challenges that technical developments present to the Internet Economy. The Foresight forums are designed to enable constructive dialogue between these key stakeholders on key Internet issues that have previously included RFID, Next Generation Networks, Participative Web, Smart ICT and Cloud computing. "The Internet with its global communications networks and richness of data enables entirely new ways of addressing environmental challenges. Individuals and organizations are increasingly using innovative ICT applications for greater sustainability. But some issues remain to be addressed, e.g. relating to co-ordination between ICT and environmental policy communities, and will be addressed at this OECD Forum", says Arthur Mickoleit, author of the new OECD report "Greener and Smarter. ICTs, the environment and climate change". As the coordinator of the Internet Technical Advisory Committee (ITAC) to the OECD, the Internet Society has participated in past editions of the OECD Foresight Forum. The 2010 OECD Foresight Forum will focus on Smart ICTs and Green Growth and will be held in Paris on 29 September. As this is a pilot fellowship, the Internet Society invited participants of its other NGL components to apply. The two successful applications were submitted by: + Vinayak Hegde (India): Currently working as a Lead Architect at Inmobi, a leading mobile Ad network, Hegde works on designing multi-datacenter networks, large-scale data-processing platforms and high-performance ad servers. Prior to Inmobi, he built network performance measurement tools at Akamai. His fields of expertise are large-scale networks, large-scale data processing and programming languages. + Rafid Fatani (Saudia Arabia/UK): Fatani has been involved in the IT industry in a variety of roles since 1991. He is the founder and director of SASIconsult - Saudi Arabian Strategic Internet Consultancy, a leading Saudi ICT consultancy that offers an innovative portfolio of Internet related research and services. As well as being involved in the industry through the company, Fatani is in the final stages of his interdisciplinary PhD at the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom, looking at Global Internet governance and its implications on state actor policy formation. The NGL programme is sponsored by organizations including: Nominet Trust and the Association Fran?aise pour le Nommage Internet en Coop?ration (AFNIC) and the European Commission. Whilst not 100% sure about this, I suspect that this might be caused by our IPv6 Matrix Crawler which we are running pro-bono to track the spread of IPv6 content. Having officially announced some of its results at the conference which was hosted in London by the Internet Society on 29th September 2010, I wanted to announce this here too: ISOC England was awarded a Community Grants Programme award in November 2009, for the design and implementation of an ?IPv6 crawler,? a computer and its software that would crawl through the DNS at pre-set intervals in order to detect, for example, IPv6 DNS servers and IPv6 compliant Web servers, SMTP mailers, and NTP servers. The search for project partners led to a link-up with Nile University (Egypt) where professors and their research assistants got to grips with IPv6, and started the task of writing the software required in the project, as part of their experience. In the short term, the maps show a snapshot of real world IPv6 penetration data at a glance, and detailed results are also made available, helped by a system of user-configured filters. A presentation of the September 2010 data for Europe and Asia was made at the INET London conference, its deck of slides downloadable from: http://www.slideshare.net/ocl999/ipv6-matrix-exec-summary One final note, before you ask: we have received 9 enquiries (out of 980 000 domains) about Firewalls erroneously detecting a port attack of some sort during the scanning process. The only ports which the Crawler tests connectivity to are: - Port 25 (SMTP) - Port 53 (DNS) - Port 80 (HTTP) - Port 443 (HTTPS) - Port 123 (NTP) This generates an insignificant amount of traffic in the order of a few bytes only. Let me make this clear: we are not performing port scans.
